ABOUT INLAYS
The Mnandi, the Annual Limited Edition Sebenza and the Classic Wood or Leather Sebenzas are all enhanced with inlays on front and back of the handles. In 1999, we introduced our first folding knife with an inlay - the Annual Limited Edition Sebenza.
I had done quite a bit of inlay work while I was still making custom one-of-a-kind knives and so had seen the Sebenza as a "handle-waiting-for-an-inlay"! The essence of what I wanted to do rests in "inlay" and not "overlay". It is quite easy to add a piece of wood or ivory onto the outside of the handle, but I wanted to "inlay" the piece. There is also a great difference between hand fitting an inlay on a one-of-a-kind custom knife and offering an inlay in volume - albeit a limited volume! Choosing to take the inlay route requires machining both a pocket and a section of material of almost identical dimensions, and setting the section into the pocket.
THE MNANDI
The Mnandi continues the tradition of high quality that you have come to expect from Chris Reeve Knives.
An elegant, functional gentleman's (or gentlewoman's) pocket knife, the Mnandi (pronounced mm-nun-dee)) is accurately named from the Zulu word meaning "very nice".
* The titanium handles are inlaid (not overlaid) front and back
* The locking mechanism is the Integral Lock©, popularized on the Sebenza
The handle inlay of the knife shown above is African Blackwood. There is a wide variety of woods that
could be used and we continue to experiment, it just depends on what we can obtain.
* The S30V blade is machined on both sides with an enlarged thumbnail recess for easy opening
* The versatile pocket clip is machined from solid titanium and can be placed on either side of the knife or removed completely
* Available in dedicated left or right hand models

THE UMNUMZAAN
Umnumzaan n (ūm-nūm-zahn) [Zulu]
Sir; Mister; Boss (colloq.)
In every sense of the definition, Umnumzaan is a knife deserving respect. Developed from the 20+ year
heritage of the Sebenza, this bold, innovative folding knife is one to be reckoned with for its inventive
design features and ability to get the job done.
For Blade Show 2008, CRK presents 20 prototypes, each with “Umnumzaan” engraved on the handle
and numbered 1/20. We anticipate these will all sell at a premium price. Once in production, these two
features will be omitted, making the prototypes even more collectible. We are planningproduction of the
Umnumzaan to begin sometime in September so finished knives should start shipping in October 2008.
A ceramic ball creates the interface between the blade locking
surface and the integral locking arm surface. The ball doubles
to drop into a detent on the blade to ensure the blade does not
open accidentally.
Typical of CRK, the pivot strength is more robust than other
folders. The large pivot screw and pin are supported by large
thrust washers. These perforated phosphor bronze washers
reduce friction and double to retain the fluorinated grease for
longer lubrication thereby extending the life of the knife.
The thumb lug doubles as the stop pin, ensuring a solid lockup.
Around the lug is a polyurethane o-ring that acts as a shock
absorber to cushion the impact of the lug against the handle.
Never wishing to copy other designs without giving credit,
Grant and Gavin Hawk originated the shock absorber concept
in one of their many innovative designs. We appreciate their
consent for Chris to use this adaptation of their concept.
